Puri: Where have all the flowers gone?
Skateboarding is thriving in Tbilisi, Georgia
Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, has seen a surge in the popularity of skateboarding since it first took off in 2003. Initially, skaters faced challenges in finding boards and parts, resorting to school exchange programs and second-hand shops. However, the skate scene has evolved over time, with Tbilisi now boasting a diverse range of spots that mix Soviet architecture with modern structures.
Discovering Tbilisi
Skateboarder Roman Ivanov first visited Tbilisi in 2017 and fell in love with the city. He returned in 2019 with a friend to explore the local skate scene and film a video project. The unique landscape, vibrant architecture, and welcoming locals make Tbilisi an ideal destination for skateboarders.
Building a skatepark in Tbilisi
Following the construction of the city’s first-ever real skatepark, Roman Ivanov spent four months in Tbilisi in 2020, skating with locals and immersing himself in the local culture. Unfortunately, his plans were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and a subsequent injury. Nevertheless, Roman’s passion for skateboarding continued, leading him to join a skatepark construction project in the south of Russia.
The Puri video project
Dmitry Kononov, a friend of Roman Ivanov, joined him in Tbilisi during challenging times. Together, they embarked on the Puri video project, bringing together a diverse group of people who found solace and camaraderie in skateboarding. The project aimed to showcase Tbilisi in a unique and authentic way, depicting the city and its skate spots like never before.
A tribute to Georgia
The Puri video project is a testament to the warm hospitality and support of the Georgian people. Skaters respected the local community and introduced themselves at each spot, fostering friendships and creating a positive atmosphere. Georgia proved to be a welcoming destination with friendly locals, a pleasant climate, and incredible skate spots.
