A Very Loose History Of Skateboard Shapes

Part I & II

Whenever you flip through a board company’s new catalogue, it’s now very common to see non-popsicle and odd-shaped boards given some level of prominence. The amount varies, with brands like Girl, Zero, and Deathwish having a small selection while popsicles are totally absent for Welcome Skateboards whereas some companies now only offer shaped boards ( Welcome Skateboards & Polar Skate Co.). This fascination burgeons from Skateboarding’s past, with the 80’s allowing skateboarders to truly experiment with skateboards shapes as fashion trumped function.

While non-popsicle boards obviously have a long history of skateboarding, their current revival may exist as a reaction to a culture that is seen as becoming stagnant and watered-down, to some it’s just a change in their skating, something new to try to shake up their daily session, and to some it’s a stylish statement.

It is so interesting to see how this current generation of shaped boards is taking so much inspiration from past shapes, bringing the retro flair to the forefront.

With Skateboarding having such a rich history of shapes it is not suprising to see shapes of years gone by influencing the new-wave of shaped skateboards.

You can see the lines drawn by Hosoi, Powell & H-Street in the lineups of Welcome, Polar and many more.

Skateboarding continues to draw from it’s past and reappropriate old ideas into new shapes and concaves built for modern skating.
